Lots of consumer consulted Padapada about IPL hair removal at home results, so that we make an article here.
The results differs from person to person depending on age, hair color and stage of hair growth is that you start the treatment. For people with light to medium skin and dark hair:
- You’ll notice the hair took longer to grow back (around 48 hours to show stubble).
- Then you’d get a few stray hairs within 5 days but mostly it STARTS to grow back more consistently after 8-10 days.
- After 5months, the results would like the "permanent" look (the hair won't be permanently gone and will need 4-8 week top ups).
- The whole treatment would needs 8-12 sessions.
- The area that hair tends to be thicker might needs to perform more sessions.
How Does IPL/Laser Hair Removal Work?
As the melanin could absorb the IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), IPL works best on people with light to medium skin and dark hair. If you are very pale with very blonde hair or have very dark skin with dark hair, then IPL may not be for you.
And, red and white hair contains less pigment for the device to target, so the IPL is unfortunately not suitable for these colors too.
IPL/Laser Hair Removal Results
For different IPL devices that have different effects, we are here to take Padapada IPL device as an example.
Results for pale skin and dark hair
People with pale skin and dark hair are the best candidate for IPL, people could see the results around 3-4 sessions, then the hair would be thinner, weaker and took longer to grow back. 5 months later, you’ll see the "permanent" look, then you just need 4-8 week top-ups.
Note: some parts, the area that hair tends to be thicker, needs more sessions to see the results.
There are some pictures for IPL/laser hair removal before and after
It’s recommended to do one session every two weeks for the first four sessions and then every four weeks on whichever area you are treating. After 3 sessions, you may notice the amazing process:
The hairs themselves are thinner/weaker, so that when you shave them before using IPL, there is NO red bumps or razor burn at all and NO ingrown hairs, this is a huge issue for many people, for the red and raw look is more noticeable than just having hair there sometimes.
- A few stray hairs grow back within 5 days but mostly it STARTS to grow back more consistently after 8-10, smooth for SO LONG! You can get the same result from waxes, but IPL much quicker, hurts less, and cheaper in the long run.
5-12 months later, is when you hit the "permanent" look, the hair won't be permanently gone, but the hair will grow back longer, like 4-8 weeks, a "permanent" hair growth level.
Results for dark skin and dark hair
Most home IPL and laser devices aren’t safe for dark skin because of how the light energy behaves. It works like this:
First, there’s a dark pigment (called melanin) that gives your hair a dark color. This pigment absorbs several wavelengths of the strong light energy, and then it converts to heat. This heat damages key areas of your follicle and stunts your hair growth. After a few sessions, hairs stop growing. And after several more, results can last months.
However, there’s also melanin in your skin. Dark skin has much more melanin than light skin.
And this is bad for laser and IPL hair removal. That’s because with little contrast between your skin and hair color, your melanin-rich skin cells also absorb the light energy and become very hot. This causes pain, blisters, and even burns! That’s why laser and IPL work best on light to medium skin tones with dark hair.
Manufacturers use the Fitzpatrick skin chart to show the safe skin tones for their devices.
There are 6 Fitzpatrick types, measured from type I (the lightest) through to the darkest type VI. All home IPL and laser devices are safe for Fitzpatrick types I to IV.
We don’t suggest IPL hair removal if you have dark skin. Some brands said their products safe for dark skin, ask their customer service to confirm that again before buying the device.
Results for fair skin and light hair
As we said before, IPL works best on people with dark hair, If you are very pale with very blonde hair, then the IPL may not be for you. And, red and white hair contains less pigment for the device to target, so the IPL is unfortunately not suitable for these colors too.
Before taking an order, consulting the seller for more details to confirm their device could work for light hair.
Different people have different effects with IPL removal, amazing results always happened on those with pale skin and dark hair. People with dark skin and dark hair, or fair skin and light hair, may get hurt or need much longer time to see the results.
There are some hair removal brands liked by consumers: Padapada, Silk’n, Braun and Philips Lumea, we’ll do a detailed review for these brands later.
